Weekly Theme:"Faceted Stones" (May 18, 2005)

Due to my CT, I was unable to do the intense wire work needed this week to set a faceted stone, but I managed to make some silver clay pendants by working a few minutes each day.

I had seen some gorgeous pendants done by my metal clay teacher, Arlene Hildebrand, and was anxious to try some of the techniques. I am hoping to get lots of practice in handling clay, and I am willing to do the homework and try to sharpen my abilities.

The first pendant I made was sort of a "miracle" pendant, where the dichro was held by a folded-over circle of clay. I saw one of these in class, and was amazed that it stayed in its setting! My own piece came out of the kiln wonderfully, and held the stone throughout tumbling and mounting on an omega. However, before I could stop him, a gentleman pulled on the stone with all his strength managed to dislodge it. Now it must be glued or scrapped.

In the meantime, I finished this piece instead: a striking lavender dichro which I designed and H fired for me.This dichroic cabochon has mesmerizing rivers of rainbow colors, providing a magical glimpse into the flowing energies of the universe. I have crafted the silver bezel around it with the design of a cloak which seems to safeguard the stone. Although the picture shows the setting falling short of the stone, its just an unfortunate angle of the lens. In reality, the dichroic lays snugly and fully in its grooved bezel. The bail bears the coil of the mythical serpent.
