2004-05 Year of Jewelry

Weekly Theme:"Hop on Copper" (June 15, 2005)

I have this muse... her name is Whimsy. Now Miss Whimsy took herself a fit awhile back, when she saw a certain stone pendant made by Eni Oken. You see, it was reminiscent of a pin/brooch I had as a child, one that was made of many stones. I so loved that pin! I would run my fingers over the stones because they made me feel better. This particular pin was cheap costume jewelry, however, and although the stones were real, the "gold" discolored and became ugly. I am not sure where that pin ever went...

At any rate, I tried to satisfy Miss Whimsy with the turquoise pendant I made last week, but oh no, that just wasn't what she wanted! And she's feeling pretty frisky, so she is, with my being able to finally hold a pair of pliers after almost 8 weeks off.

So after the turquoise pendant was done, I felt this nagging and worrying, and nothing would do but that I must sit down and sort through my beads... and with Miss Whimsy's help, we chose a lovely combination of stones, caramels and camels, burnt sienna and mother of pearl. Ok, I told her, *someday* we will make this pendant... and I put the stones into my box of promising projects, in their own little section.

But that wasn't good enough for my muse. This morning, after yesterday's mediocre show, with the tension gone and having gotten a good night's sleep, Miss Whimsy began her little whiney song... and so I got the stones out and we began.

Now, Miss Whimsy has this thing right now for coiled jewelry; but just let me start coiling away, and soon she is pouting, wanting it to be done already. She is ALWAYS trying to find a short cut so she doesn't have to sit and watch me slowly coil, coil, coil. Today, I simply told her, "YOU are the one who wanted this pendant. YOU are going to sit still while it gets coiled!"

And so she did! And then, when she saw that it was almost done, she screeched me to a halt and demanded that it become a brooch instead!

So here it is: the wistful recreation of a childhood treasure.
Thanks, Eni!
